Last Saturday I finally got to deliver the chocolate
fudge pie to a lady for her birthday. It's a week late because my
right arm and shoulder decided it was mad at me.
This is a really good pie. The first time I put it in a 9" deep dish it wasn't enough filling. So I thought this time I would double the filling part and get it the way I like it. Well..... that was a mistake! LOL I love nothing better than a 9"deep dish pie. They are just so much prettier than those skinny scrawny regular pies. That just didn't work for this one. When you put it in the deep dish it is really hard to bake properly. It is so thick and soooo chocolaty instead of 45 minutes to bake it took about 1.5 hours ! Then when done it just didn't look as pretty. I also had a whole bunch of filling left over to play with in other smaller pie shells. (I am terrible at judging how much a recipe will fill up the pie pan. One of those see it to believe it people I guess)
Well anyway I called to make sure they were home and took it over too them. They live in the country I had my mask on and we were outside. I told her the pie didn't come out the way I wanted it to and I hope they don't mind cleaning up my experiment. We had a nice visit with her and her husband. They are 80+ and he has a heart problem. He lost a lot of weight so every now and then I take over a experiment to fatten him up. Before I left she made sure to tell me that the things I bring over are sure a big help. It kind of hit me then. I thought I was taking something over to let her know we loved her and happy birthday. It looks like I may be helping in other ways I had not even considered.
This older couple is wonderful. Before the big shut down they would go out to eat several times a week. That way they got to get out and do something and eat something different. She is very involved with church so was also busy with that. Since her husband is not feeling very energetic at all with his meds and still hopefully rebuilding and now this !!@# virus they are staying home more.
They have good helpful family nearby. A couple of sons and a daughter and all. They will help with anything in a heartbeat. Some folks may not be used to having older folks in the family. They may not have been up close with aging adults in other words. No matter how much you love them sometimes there are just so many little things they you don't realize is hard for them to do. Thank goodness their family is aware of what older folks need. With the age, stress or a sick spouse, a totally upside down daily life between the illness and the virus it is taking a tole. She gets so tired so easily and doesn't feel like cooking much. Sandwiches may be a little much some days. She said it just don't take much and she is worn out. I totally understand that and I am nowhere near 80!
They are not getting to go out to eat much, to tired to fix a big meal for 2. Probably snacking around. I know her daughter takes over food or cooks meals I don't know how often and I am sure her sons would also. When she said with a serious look on her face and her telling me how much the goodies I bring over help and make a difference. It really opened my eyes up. I told her with the biggest smiley voice I could wearing a mask ... I know I get tired of cooking and eating the same old thing! You just tell me when your done with that pie plate and I will come and get it.
I told hubby next time I go I am going to see if I can have some cantaloupe and watermelon in bite size melon balls for them to munch on. They need stuff like that but I am sure it wears her out to "prep" the fresh veggies.
So don't forget the "OLDIES" folks.
Even if not a relative or not so sweet. Even if they have great family close by. You may be the one that brings or says or does just the right thing to put a spring in their step again.
